HUTCHERSON-TURNER FAMILY HISTORY

REVISED JULY 2025 by Cynthia Hardaway-Walker

The family roots began after Elsie and John Arthur Hutcherson married on November 5, 1875.  They had two sons, John aka ‘Bud’ in 1876, and Arthur on February 4, 1879 (1880 Census).  Bud died at an early age.  A few years later, John, Sr. passed.

After the death of her spouse, Elsie met and married Mark Turner on February 20, 1883.  This marriage produced three sons, and one daughter, Jackson on April 24, 1884, Edmond in 1886, Margaret in 1890, and William in 1893.  Both Elsie and Mark passed while the children were young.  According to the 1900 Census, Jackson and Edmond Turner lived with their Uncle Jackson Turner (Mark Turner’s brother), along with Jackson’s daughter Emma and grandson, Walter.

Edmond drifted off to Chicago.  The family lost contact with him.  In the 1910 Census, Margaret and William Turner are no longer living with Uncle Jackson but are now residing with their brother, Jackson.

Arthur and Jackson remained in contact.  Jackson lived in Forest City, Arkansas.  Arthur lived in Rondo, Arkansas.  They were both about 20 miles from Marianna, Arkansas.  Marianna was a town where farmers and other rural area people went to do there shopping, entertainment, etc… like we go to the mall.

Arthur aka ‘Babe’ and Jackson aka ‘Tut” would meet and spend time with each other.  Jackson, Jr.  better known as ‘Big Son’ would tag along with them.  He remembered this was a fun time for him.

In August, 1940, Jackson ‘Tut’ brought his family to visit Arthur and his family.  This was the last time they saw each other.  Jackson passed on September 7, 1940, and Arthur passed on December 10, 1940, three (3) months later.

Arthur’s wife, Virginia and their children all left Arkansas one by one.  Some of them went to Chicago, IL, some to Cleveland, OH, some to Toledo, OH and others went to Philadelphia, PA.

Jackson’s wife, Cherry passed while still living in Arkansas.  Their children also migrated to other parts of the States.  Some went to Memphis, TN, some to St. Louis, MO, and some to Chicago, IL.

Everlue Hutcherson-Martin and Mattie Hutcherson-Talbert lived in Toledo, OH.  They and their first cousin, Everlena Turner-Tolbert kept in touch.  The Hutcherson siblings would all get together every Memorial Day in Toledo, OH, where their mother, Virginia and other family members were buried.

They came from Chicago, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Philadelphia.  They would have a cookout, homemade ice cream, barbeque, pies, cakes…, the works.  Then all would go visit the cemetery.

Lena was visiting Everlue and Mattie in Toledo on one of those occasions.  She was impressed and inspired to have both brothers’ families reunite.  Thus the Hutcherson-Turner Family Reunion idea was born.  Lena called a meeting at her home in St. Louis, in 1972.  Everlue and Mattie notified their families, of what was about to transpire. Both, Jackson’s, and Arthur’s descendants agreed to attend and meet during the second weekend in July.  And we have been meeting year after year every since.

Jackson and his wife Cherry had eight (8) children, six (6) of which lived to be adults.  However all have since then passed.  The last two (2), Elsie ‘Red’ Turner-Miller passed in July 18, 1995, at the age of 81, and Jackson ‘Big Son’ Turner passed on July 26, 2000, at the age of 77.  Arthur and his wife Virginia had fifteen (15) children, eleven (11) of which lived to be adults.  As of today all eleven have since passed on.  The last two (2), Doris Hutcherson-Hardaway passed on October 30, 2009, at the age of 82, and Catherine Hutcherson-Johnson passed on June 15, 2014, at the age of 88.

Our Founder, Everlena Turner-Tolbert passed away in 1978, at the age of 70.

Keep on coming.  Keep on loving.  God bless each and every one of us.
